To add Gmail to a mail app you need Google's IMAP and SMTP servers and an app password: Google doesn't let mail apps sign in with your normal Google password.

Make a Gmail app password
App passwords only appear once 2-Step Verification is on. Most work and school accounts (Google Workspace) can't make them at all.
- Turn on 2-Step Verification. In your Google Account, open Security and turn it on if it is off.
- Open app passwords. Go to myaccount.google.com/apppasswords.
- Make one and copy it. Name it after your mail app and copy the 16-character password Google shows. You won't see it again.
Use Gmail in GotEmail
You don't have to type any of this. In GotEmail, choose Add Account and pick Gmail: the servers, ports and encryption above are filled in for you. You paste the password, and your mail starts loading.
Good to know
- Changing your Google password removes all your app passwords; make a new one afterwards.
- Our guide to Gmail app passwords covers the "setting isn't available" message and other snags.
